Nzinga (2006)

Following the black slaves’ escape, celebrating their “ginga” in Capoeira rituals, the movie Nzinga honors NZINGA MBUNDU, the African Queen of Matamba whose sense of cultural resistance reflected the contribution of Africa to Brazilian Culture. The film is narrated by an Afro-Brazilian Oracle and through the dialog between the wise figure of a Mae de Santo, caretaker of the memory of African-Brazilian’s trajectory, and the inexperienced Ana, baptized Nzinga, the percussionist who searches for self-knowledge and follows “the call of the drum,” driving us to a great musical journey. Brazil, 2006, 84 min, documentary, Portuguese with English subtitles, Octavio Bezerra dir.
